Torrevieja is one of the largest and most famous resorts of the Costa Blanca. Like most towns of the region, it appeared at a moment’s notice. In a matter of a few months, several fishing villages were replaced by a long strip of hotels, beaches, villas and apartments. The construction boom in Torrevieja began in the first half of the 80s of the 20th century. After more than twenty years its results are impressive. The population of Torrevieja has increased 8-fold since the construction of the resort began.

The main advantage of Torrevieja is its unique microclimate. Salt lakes Las Salinas, located near the city, enrich the local atmosphere with the important trace elements. The city even has a special museum dedicated to salt – Museo del Mar y de la Sal.

As usual, hotels and resorts occupied most of the urban landscape in Torrevieja. However, some remnants of antiquity have been preserved here. This is the old town of Torrevieja. It consists of several picturesque churches, the old railway station, as well as the main city attraction – the tower. Its history is unique in its own way. The thing is, it is the tower which gave the town its name (Torrevieja means “old tower” in Spanish). Unfortunately, the very first tower has not been preserved to the present day. However, local residents built a new tower with their own money in order “to restore historical justice”.

The beaches of Torrevieja by no aspects concede to the beaches of other famous resorts of the Costa Blanca in their quality. The blue flag of the EU flies proudly over each of them: the beaches of Mata, Locos, Cura and Naufragos. The beaches of Guardamar and Orihuela, located next to Torrevieja, are also popular among the tourists. And not long ago the Aquapolis water amusement park, which operates throughout the summer, was opened in Torrevieja.

August is probably the most interesting time at the resort. That’s when the festival of the famous Habanera, a dance that Spanish sailors brought from Cuba, takes place. Habanera melody is well known to all the lovers of classical music. It was used by composer Georges Bizet in his world famous opera Carmen.

What you need to do in Torrevieja is to have fun at Lo Rufete Adventure Park, riding quad bikes, archering or playing paintball; to see pink flamingos in the park of Molino del Agua for the first time in your life; to capture yourself against the pink lagoon; to find a decommissioned military submarine El Dolphin at the port and finally to indulge in dreams with a glass of wine in a restaurant overlooking the sea.
